FALL CROPS

Better late than never!  We've been talking about getting in another round of greens and beets and sugar snap peas.... had we planted these when we first thought of it (4+ weeks ago) we'd be harvesting baby greens for dinner!  Today we finally got started on this.  We got arugula and mesclun mix seeds in as well as kale and mizuna starts.

Greens Bed new lettuce starts in front, mesclun mix and arugula seeds in the middle and thriving chard in the back.
We went a bit crazy at the nursery today with their half price sale and bought more trees than we could fit in the truck!  It took two trips to get things home and during my second trip Jim texted me this:

Grubs - bad news
The nursery folks unanimously said these were grubs and nasty and rather impervious to most means of eradication except nasty poisons which we will not use.  So our option is to hand pick them out.  Apparently they become either Japanese beetles or Jerusalem Crickets.  Jim found them in the greens bed when he was turning the soil over to prepare for planting and while moving the hoop receivers as we prepare this bed to be one of our overwintering beds.

It is fun getting a start on the fall/winter crops!
