HOT!

9:00 PM and 90 degrees!  The grapes are growing several inches each day.  Most of the veggies look really happy with the heat.  We are trying to figure out the watering situation.  I think we need to move to fewer days and heavier watering but it is hard to tell when it is over 100 degrees in the afternoons.

Last night we planted the last bed with parsnips, bush beans, eggplant and bell peppers.  I also weeded all the beds... now I need to tackle the unwatered weeds in the rest of the garden!  I've been giving everything short hard blasts with the hose to try to stay on top of the whitefly situation.  It seems like things are improving but it's hard to tell.  The squash and corn are looking good.  Our mystery volunteer is going nuts.  It keeps developing fruit but it is withering off as it's not getting pollinated.... only female flowers so far.  We are still not sure if it is zucchini or cucumber.

We are so excited about our fig slips!  I keep forgetting to mention these.  We got these a while back (April 29th)  from Rick at Apple Hill Farms!  They are from his israeli fig tree which has the most gorgeous and delicious figs... green skin pink flesh and incredible flavor.  We had been keeping them in a jar of sugar water in a makeshift green house (made with two clear storage bins stacked on top of each other) in the garage.  I've been changing the water when it looked cloudy and thought all was lost when the leaves had all dried up, shriveled and fallen off.  Then I saw new buds forming and I see tiny little roots starting!  Now the leaves are unfolding and there is even a baby fig on one!  I think they still have a while till full roots form and they are ready for planting.  They seem quite happy now so we will not change anything.
