Garden Overview Memorial Day
Some locals say that you are not supposed to plant your tomatoes until Memorial Day Weekend. Other locals say that you are not to o so until the snow is gone from the White Mountains. Thanks to Chuck and his green thumb, and thank to walls of water, we are able to plant his babies (heirlooms nurtured lovingly indoors from seeds) in early April. Safely tucked away in their walls of water, they thrive until this weekend. Yesterday we removed the walls of water and erected their summer cages. These seven foot tall cages seem a bit optimistic at this time of year but we know/hope that they are appropriate.

First Tomatoes on Early Girl!
Today we found our first tomatoes on the vine! Early girl is living up to her name and has several tomatoes set. We are so excited but trying not to count our tomatoes before they ripen (since we don't have chickens and eggs yet). We are still a bit scarred from last years episode of leaf curl virus. We are hoping this does not happen again (though the leaf hoppers are abundant and we are reluctant to spray as the ladybugs are morphing right now). If it does, we will not yank the plants this year but let them grow as our neighbors did and see what happens.

Chard and Eggplant (and lots of weeds)
Today we finally felt safe in pulling the protective plastic off beds one and two. It has been hot for so long frost and cool weather seem most unlikely. Removing these covers allowed us to get at the amazing amount of weeds that have grown inside them. We weeded and pulled the last of the winter veggies from bed one, beets, carrots and onions. We are still eating chard so kept that.
