We have had a pretty cold stretch of weather. Today is lovely but there is still plenty of ice on the creek and ditch. The arbor vitae we planted in the fall don't look so great. They are a bit crispy looking... I think they needed more water than they were getting naturally. We have hand watered them two or three times since we turned off the water and they have received a few good soaking rains but it seems they needed more... at least this first season. Hopefully they will recover in the spring but I'm not too sure.
The covered beds look okay but between the cold snaps and winds which keep blowing them open some of the lettuces (near the end) and the chard (near the opposite end) are pretty frost nipped. The stuff in the middle still looks good.
The leeks look like they are over ready to harvest... I should pull them all and try braising them. The garlic is only a few inches tall and the shallots have still not sprouted. After a little research, it looks like this is normal and they won't sprout till the soil warms up. That's good news.
We tied up some of the blackberries. In the next few weeks we need to cut back the blackberries, raspberries and grapes. We also need to prune our fruit trees. Finally we need to transplant the two cherry trees. While we were working on the blackberries today we saw and heard a pair of red tailed hawks courting. That was fun to see!
It feels like things are going to start budding in the next month or so. That is very exciting! And means we need to get a jump on the remainder of our dormant season tasks and think about feeding everything again.
