A New Day 9 June 2015

I went for my morning stroll through the garden and saw a large raven flying across the garden over the creek and up canyon carrying a squirrel in it's mouth!  That was an odd but cool sighting.    It almost makes up for the empty tomato beds!

The garden looks so barren without tomato plants.  The good news is that we've been seeing baby preying mantises already.  Last year we watched the brood grow into hunting machines!  We first saw them in the grasses last year along the creek.  This year there are many in the garden, on the blackberry bushes and in the tomato beds among others.

Just got back from a run into town to buy some replacement tomato plants.  We got eleven plants.  Nine or ten are indeterminant and one or two are determinant.  We will have to look for a few more (hopefully determinants) this weekend.  It was too windy this evening to want to be out planting so hopefully we'll get these in the ground tomorrow.  The grapevines are growing well as are the blackberries.  Have a lot of work to do in the garden this week.  I hope we can get a chunk of it taken care of after work tomorrow!
