This weekend we started replacing the micro drip sprinklers and bubblers with hoses. First we tried a mini soaker hose. It seems like a good option but is so much slower than everything else. We would need to let those beds run 10-15 minutes rather than the 3-5 they are on now. Those are going to be moved into whiskey barrels and flower pots around the house but will definitely need to be on their own watering station. So we are moving to the micro drip lines in the garden beds. Of course we have two different types of these, one brown, one black and they seem to emit at quite different rates too. This will need a bit more research but these lines seem to be a more effective and efficient way to water our raised beds. They look like they will eliminate over spray and pooling while watering everything we need. A week or so will tell!
Yesterday I planted two more short rows of mesclun mix. It was not quite three weeks since the last planting. We might have an abundance of lettuce but that is fine. Something is eating our leeks (just nipping the tops off) and has turned our butternut squash seedlings into lettuce! This squash took a long time to sprout and I'm so sad they have been eaten. We will have to plant some more tonight after work. We'll also plant the potatoes tonight or tomorrow. After much debate about trash can planting or not, we decided to dedicate one raised bed to potatoes. This will be another experiment.
It seems like the deer are still around. We did see one last Monday just down the road while driving back from So. Cal. I've seen none in the neighborhood and noticed no tracks for quite a while but several of flowers in the whiskey barrels keep getting mowed. Also, despite the five foot fencing, one of the peach trees has a branch ripped most the way off. We tried to mend this but I think we need to just prune it back.
