Tomatoes and basil headed for the dinner table
This is such an exciting time of year. Fruit is setting in the garden and we are beginning to harvest a little bit each day. Dinners keep getting better and better. The onions are drying and should be ready to trim and store in another week.

We have a lot of tomatoes set and they are beginning to ripen. We have just begun to plan meals around the first few ripe tomatoes... salads, pizza, and more.

Since the pill bugs devoured so many of our pole bean starts, we decided to grow a few indoors. These have been slow to germinate but we will plant them outdoors once they are big enough to survive the bugs (we hope)

The grape vines have been growing so quickly! Left untended for a few days, they begin to inhibit entry to the garden. They need to be tucked and tied in place daily or they will grab the gate, the neighboring plants, the hose reel and more.

There are quite a few clusters of grapes set. Fingers crossed, we will beat the raccoons to them this year.
As much fun as it is to work in the garden, celebrating the produce by cooking, eating, and sharing it is even more fun. We've been enjoying fresh herbs in everything and have made a variety of pizzas including fava bean, asparagus, feta with tarragon, and ham and red onion with fresh tomato sauce. Other recent treats include vegetable beef soup (from the freezer/autumn harvest) with salad of fresh lettuce, fava beans and more, frittata with spring vegetables and a side of garden, garlicky kale.
