PRUNING BERRIES

Jim at the half way, before and after clean up point
Working on the raspberries

Today our masters cross country skiing class was cancelled again due to excessive snow, wind and avalanche danger in Mammoth.  This made a perfect opportunity for a relaxing day at home in the garden.  It was cloudy here with a few sprinkles and warm enough to work in a T-shirt for part of the day, though the temperature dropped and the wind picked up in the late afternoon.
A transplant in action (Xena is helping)

We got to cut back, and transplant cleaned up, and tied up the raspberries and blackberries.  They look so much better!  We pulled the three blackberries on the east end of the patch because they seemed be and/or have become trailing rather than erect.  We transplanted some of the rogue volunteers which were growing outside of the bed or near the edge of the bed.  This still left us with five buckets of berry transplants to bring over to Kathie for her growing berry patch.

If the weather holds, tomorrow I can prune the grapevines and blueberries.  I also need to amend the soil in the blueberries and add more soil to the raspberries and rhubarb.
Happy gardeners
With all the rain we've been having the trees and shrubs and bulbs are thriving.... of course the weeds seem to be too.  I see the hula hoe in my future!
